Fall Food Drive Aims to Collect Food for the Holidays

Fall Food Drive Aims to Collect Food for the Holidays

This year’s Fall Food Drive began on November 9, and donations will be accepted until December 11. The non-perishable donations will go to the SF-Marin Food Bank. For the past 27 years, this organization has been dedicated to helping eradicate hunger in the San Francisco and Marin areas. According to their website, over 107,000 meals worth of food are distributed each day.

Senior Audrey Romjue, Leadership’s Commissioner of Outreach, organized and helped publicized this year’s food drive. “A lot of people find it hard to believe that 20 percent of Marin County’s population are in need of food assistance,” Romjue said. “As people who live in such an affluent area, it is often times hard to see the struggles that other endure on a daily basis.”

This year Leadership’s goal is to collect 2,000 pounds of food. “Last year we received 1,015 pounds of food in two weeks,” Romjue said. “If each student donated one single can of food, we would have over 1,100 pounds.”

Donation buckets are located throughout campus, including Keyser Landing, outside Student Center, and Wood Hall. According to the SF-Marin Food Bank, some of the most helpful food to donate are whole grain rice, pasta, and oats, tuna and canned meats, low sugar cereal, and low sodium soups and stews.
