Softball-backgroundThe Tam varsity softball team lost 9-0 to Marin Catholic on May 13, the day that they celebrated their senior day. For two seniors on the team, Chloe Jacobs and Hannah Saltonstall, it was their last regular season home game. Saltonstall was unable to attend the game.

“[The game] was very tough. [Marin Catholic] is second in MCALs and a very good team,” sophomore Anna Reichenbach said.

Tam only managed two hits in the loss. Reichenbach hit a triple in the first inning and senior Chloe Jacobs hit a single.

The closest Tam got to scoring was in the bottom of the first inning after Reichenbach’s triple put her on third with no outs. The following hitters were unable to score her.

The game against Marin Catholic was a makeup game that was postponed due to Tam’s pitcher going on the France trip. “Luckily, Marin Catholic was wonderful enough to let us reschedule when we had our pitcher back,” head coach Erin Lawley said.

Lawley was impressed by Marin Catholic’s performance. “They’re really good on defense, their pitcher is the best in the league, they have some of the best hitters in the league. Eight of their hitters are hitting above .350. They’re very well coached,” Lawley said.

“They played a good game, but we could have given them more of a challenge,” Jacobs said.

Despite the score, Lawley was happy about the seniors’ performance throughout the regular season. Jacobs has been on the team all four years and has been the captain for two years. “She has led like a captain all four years,” Lawley said. “Her primary position is shortstop, she’s the best shortstop in the league, she’s phenomenal.” Due to a finger injury during the season, her playing has been limited. She was unable to hit for several games, and she played first base and left field instead of shortstop. “Literally, when she was in left field, the other shortstop and center fielder would run over to her as she would catch [the ball] and she’d [lob it to them],” Lawley said.

Saltonstall has also played all four years. She’s an outfielder and was in the Tamiscal Team program her junior year, limiting her time on the team “She’s such a great teammate and just a really wonderful kid, so I told her ‘we’ll take you as much as we can get you,’” Lawley said. “We’ve been so weird with numbers based on a lot of injuries and illnesses. So, she has been super clutch in allowing us to still play the games and not forfeit.”

Saltonstall reflected on her time on the team this year. “Mid season, Tam softball lost a few freshmen players for personal reasons and Coach Lawley reached out to me,” she said. “It’s fun to see all the girls I’ve been playing with for years and [to meet] new freshman….playing ball with Tam has definitely upped my skills from continuous practice and games, and it’s cool to think about how much I’ve improved.”
