Portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt visited Tam and were displayed in Ruby Scott Gym on Friday, November 30. The nationwide quilt, which memorializes those who have lost their lives to AIDS, is composed of patches made by the deceased’s loved ones.

The Marin AIDS Project, which provides HIV/AIDS services, education and support, supplied Tam with four sections, or “blocks,” of the quilt (which measures 1,293,300 square feet in total when assembled) after a request from Social Studies teacher and GSA adviser Laura Garrett.

In addition to supplying Tam with portions of the quilt, the Marin AIDS Project contributed speakers to inform students about AIDS. A representative of the organization stood by the quilt, giving out informational flyers and answering questions about the disease.

“Kids are having sex and they don’t know the consequences,” junior Ravi Shankar said. “I think it’s important to learn [the impact of AIDS] while we’re in high school before we go out into the world.”
