Girls’ Varsity Soccer Loses to Redwood at Home (January 21)

The girls’ varsity soccer team lost 0-1 to Redwood in a highly contested match at home on January 21.

Both sides had several shots on goal and created many passing connections in the first half.  The game was deadlocked until the 40th minute, when a foul gave Redwood a freekick just outside Tam’s box at the twenty-yard line.  A driven shot past the wall and into the far-side netting gave Redwood the goal that would ultimately decide the match.

The second half was equally hard fought; Redwood kept numbers behind the ball and absorbed wave after wave of Tam’s attack.  Calls for handball in the Redwood box in the 79th minute from the Tam bench went unanswered by the referee, the game ending shortly after with the final 0-1 scoreline.

“We worked hard and came with a good fighting spirit,” coach Shane Kennedy said after the match.  “Going forward we’re looking to improve our finishing in front of goal.  Our understanding of each other from the back third to the middle third is pretty good, so I think we just have to finish better.”

“Of course we didn’t get the result we wanted, but over the past few games we’ve shown solidarity in our defense,” co-captain Izzy Reeves said. “Now inevitably the next step is to capitalize our chances in the attacking third.”
