After a customer complaint, our neighboring Safeway has made the change from separate gender bathrooms to two unisex facilities. According to Eric Dohner, the manager of the Camino Alto Safeway, the switch was made a couple months ago by the district manager.
Some people in our community are against the switch, such as Juan Contreras, an employee. “I’m a Christian person, so I think it’s not right,” he said. “We are born as a boy and [a] girl, and according to God it’s not the right thing to do. I’m against that. There’s a lot of guys that just keep looking at girls, and I could be one too. If there’s a girl in a mini skirt that goes inside, and I go in too because I just want to see her, that’s just not right.”
Freshman Evie Robson on the other hand, thinks that the change is a positive step towards complete gender equality. “Over the past ten years, I feel like a lot of transgender [and other LGBTQ changes] have become a lot more accepted,” Robson said. “People are starting to understand it more, and it’s really good that places [are] making sure that everyone feels welcome and accepted.”
