A new California assembly bill will increase restrictions on phone use while driving, starting in January. Not only will texting or talking on the phone be prohibited, but according to the bill, “holding or operating a handheld wireless telephone” while driving will not be allowed for any reason.
Since 2013, 426,000 convictions, ranging from texting-while-driving citations to fatal collisions and property damage, have been caused by the use of handheld devices in California according to the California Assembly Democratic Caucus.
“[Phone related incidents] are completely preventable… and [the bill] will save lives,” said Bill Quirk, the democratic representative of Hayward district and creator of the bill, in a press release.
