At one point, Robert De Niro one of the best actor’s in the business. As of late however, he’s struggled to release anything of real value with films like “New Year’s Eve” and “Little Fockers.” However “Being Flynn,” a film based on the true story of Nick Flynn (Paul Dano), seemed like it might be able to break the downward spiral. Sadly, it only halts it for a moment, as the film is at it’s best mediocre.
Nick is the main character of the film, but it’s truly about Nick’s father Jonathan, played by De Niro. The film focuses on their troubled relationship and the character of Jonathan Flynn. He’s a cab driver, but a writer at heart, and constantly tells everyone how he’s one of the three greatest writers of all time, and is working hard at finishing his masterpiece.
The film attempts to make a somewhat likable and interesting character out of him, but unfortunately ends up falling flat on it’s face. The character is so undesirable you just want him to get out of his son’s life, and out of the movie. De Niro seems to be trying, but doesn’t have a lot to work with, and so he is stuck with another forgettable role, in a forgattable (but at least not atrocious) film.
