On May 22, MTV will be premiering its new show, “Hip Hop Squares.” This is a reboot of the old 60’s show “Hollywood Squares”, an old American panel game shows in which two contestants play tic-tac-toe to win cash and prizes. Hip Hop Squares will retain these same principles, but instead of having old 60’s movie stars as contestants, MTV is having Hip Hop stars, comedians, and professional sports athletes play the game. Besides a few other twists such as each contestant being encouraged to drink with a fully stocked bar, the rules remain about the same. The show is based around two contestants who play tic-tac-toe to win prizes. The board for the game is a 3 x 3 stack of open-faced cubes which will be occupied by a rapper, comedian, or other celebrity. The players are asked questions about music, pop culture, history, and other topics. The contestants must judge the truthfulness of each answer, trying to guess whether the star is bluffing or not. If the contestant is right, he/she gets a square, if they are wrong, the other contestant gets the square. Getting five X’s or O’x on the game board ensures a win.
In the preview of the first episode, legends such as Ghostface Killah, Fat Joe, and Method Man are shown participating on the show. Other more recent emerging stars such as Mac Miller and MGK will be playing as well. With the amount of rap legend, mixed with alcohol, mixed with upcoming new stars, Hip Hop Squares looks like it has a lot of potential.
