Science teacher Lyanne Abreu returned from a two week trip to the Galapagos Islands on December 4. Abreu was selected by the Toyota International Teacher Program with the help of community recommendations. The program focused on increasing environmental care by having teachers from different countries examine the recycling programs already active on the islands as well as the islands’ unique ecological history and diversity.
Abreu visited Isla Fernandina, Isla Isabela, the city Santa Cruz and many other places on her trip. While visiting the different islands, she checked out local recycling centers and visited schools to see a different system of education. “It’s an environmental thing,” she said. “[The islands] contain themselves and live as simply as possible.” Abreu will integrate what she has learned on the Ecuadorian islands into her environmental science curriculum.
