Tamalpais Girls’ varsity soccer wins MCALs; 7 players named All-League
Tamalpais High School Girls’ Varsity soccer team narrowly defeated the Redwood Giants to capture their first Marin County Athletic League(MCAL) title since the 2019-20 MCAL season. The championship game held on Saturday Feb. 15 was locked in a 0-0 tie through 80 minutes of regular time and two 10-minute golden goal overtimes.
Upon entering a penalty shootout, freshman Lila Cambell, sophomore Allegra Andreoli, and senior Isabel Alexander capitalize on Tam’s first three penalty shots. The Giants matched the first two, but missed their third penalty giving Tam a 3-2 lead. Two misses from Hawks senior Hana Leach and sophomore Lauren Willard, along with a Giants score, sent the game into sudden death.
In sudden death, senior captain Marissa Scanlan and senior Addie Covey made their shots, but were matched by two Redwood goals. It was a goal from sophomore Bridget Brat and a save by senior goalie Emily McMahon that sealed the deal.
“Words can’t describe how special it was to win MCAL’s, especially after losing in the semi-finals the past three years,” Scanlan said. The win marks the first time Tam coach Dave Presher took home an MCAL title.
Although the Hawks lost early in the Division I North Coast Section (NCS), there is still plenty to celebrate. On March 2, MCAL released it’s annual All League Soccer Honors, and seven Hawks took home awards. Willard, McMahon, Covey, and Scanlan were named to the first team, Brat and junior Lily-Rose Espinasse were named second team, and senior Sawyer Merrick was named honorable mention.
“I’m so proud of everyone and the work they’ve put in this season,” Scanlan said.
