The Mill Valley Public Library is now offering its patrons free access to the premium content of the online test prep and homework help website Shmoop. “[Shmoop] is a website that has homework help for basically every subject a high school student might encounter,” Young Adult Librarian Katie MacBride said. “[The site also features] AP test prep, PSAT, SAT, ACT test prep, SAT subject tests, college info, specialized study guides, and videos.”
MacBride is excited about the features Shmoop offers. “I think there can be the misconception that one must hire an SAT tutor if she or he is going to do well on these tests,” MacBride said. “That notion makes a fundamentally skewed test even further skewed. I think the free test prep on Shmoop allows library patrons to have access to that kind of specialized help without needing a ton of money to pay for a tutor. In my mind, anything that levels the playing field is a good thing.”
The library also has other programs scheduled that are geared towards teenagers. “We have a Creative Writing Workshop every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.,” MacBride said. “Also, the library has a lovely new young adult section that is constantly getting design upgrades. It’s reserved for teens after 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. “Now, you can actually study in an adult and children-free area,” MacBride said.
All that is required to access the premium content is a library card. To make an account visit www.shmoop.com/signup/millvalley.
