T-High U Know is a brand new lifestyles column devoted to the everyday Tam student. Each month, a random page is selected from the school directory. That open booklet is then nailed to the wall of the Tam journalism room. By throwing a dart at it, I decide who to talk to that month and ask them the question “What do you do?” Their response is printed here. Every student has a story to tell and you could be next.
People around Tam may know him as Devin Holbrook, but on his hockey team he’s simply the “Terminator.”
“Have you seen the movie ‘Goon’?” he asked. “Well, that’s me. I’m a horrible skater, but the biggest hitter on our team.”
Holbrook always enjoyed watching hockey, but one day he decided he wanted to try out the sport for himself. So he did. He approached his dad and asked to get signed up for skating lessons. Eight weeks later he had a stick in his hand and was doing everything he could to get in some pickup games.
Hockey proved hard to find here in warm Mill Valley, but nothing was going to stand in the way of Holbrook pursuing this passion. He signed up for a club team called the Santa Rosa Flyers. Now he drives 40 minutes on a good day, and two and a half hours on a bad day, by himself, three times a week, up north to hit the ice.
And hit is exactly what Holbrook loves to do. It is what drew him to rugby for eight years, but eventually getting taken down on hard ground just wasn’t enough for him. According to Holbrook, getting hit on the ice is completely different – “It’s bigger and doesn’t feel the same.” Holbrook said,“I like it more.”
That sensation is what motivates Holbrook
to play with a team made up of kids he doesn’t know outside the rink, commute on a daily basis, and drive down to places like San Jose or Fresno for games on the weekend.
Two years ago Holbrook had never played a hockey game. Today, around Tam he is the same guy, but after following a passion he also holds another identity – the “Terminator.”
