The Hawks girls basketball team traveled to Novato to face the San Marin Mustangs, who defended their home court by a final score of 63-25. The Hawks had some bright spots against the talented Mustangs team, including freshman Isla Kirkley and sophomore Journi Williams who scored 9 and 6 points respectively. Assistant Coach Lorenzo ‘Zo’ Bynum said, “Isla had a really good game, following a really good practice this week. She’s really getting better at her pick and roll.” Kirkley is one of the top scorers for the Hawks this season, and her improvements are promising. The Hawks are made up of mostly 9th and 10th graders; in fact, underclassmen scored every point for the Hawks on Tuesday night. The team faces the Branson Bulls Friday night, one of the top teams in the league. “They have Kate Spaulding, who is their guard. She’s really good. The objective is to keep the ball out of her hands,” said coach Bynum regarding shutting the Bulls down. The Hawks will need to stack a couple wins to find the playoffs this season, as they enter the halfway mark of the MCAL campaign.
