The Hawks girls basketball team took down the San Rafael Bulldogs with a final score of 48-33 in Gus gym Tuesday night. The Hawks had a commanding 8-0 start to the game because of their full court pressure that forced San Rafael to take an early timeout just two minutes into the game. Freshman Amanda Diaz and sophomore Journi Williams flourished on the press, combining for more than 10 steals in total. Eventually the Bulldogs settled in and started to even out the scoring. They went on a run of their own when they broke the press leading to quick shots. The game calmed down, and each team matched each other’s buckets. The Hawks went into halftime up by eight. After San Rafael hit a 3 in the beginning of the second half, the hawks went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 12, led by sophomore Piper Swift and freshmen Isla Kirkley and Maggie Maher. The Hawks steady offense and aggressive defense allowed them to hold their lead. Kirkley, Maher and Swift combined for 31 points, with 11, 10 and 10 respectively. Kirkley has consistently led her team in points and rebounds since Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) play started.
Kirkley said “I was able to find my rhythm at the rim thanks to my teammates consistently finding me in the right spots.” The Hawks will look to build on this win, when they face Marin Catholic Friday night.
