On Tuesday afternoon, Tamalpais High School’s Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a cookout in the Ruby Gym. Abbey Levine, Tam High’s Leadership teacher, said that BSU and Associated Student Body (ASB) began prepping for the cookout during second period. This event was funded by the Tam High Foundation, and food came from Forest Barbecue and Dee’s Organic Catering.
Levine said the idea for the cookout began a couple of years ago to celebrate Black History Month. The event, according to her, took months to prepare for.
“One of the things I love about Tam is the diversity of our student body,” Levine said, “We have a really rich history around having black students in our community and school. The more we elevate those students and their voices, the more educated our student body is.”
BSU Student President Shaniya Valentine said, “This is an event we did to bring people closer together and help them learn about our culture… BSU has helped me as a junior in high school now that I’m its president. I’m able to help my younger peers and be a resource.”
