The new marine science class, approved last spring, is underway. The agenda for the class includes a scuba diving simulation, building a mini submersible vehicle and a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The class’s teacher, April Tucker, has been trying to get the course approved for five years. Marine Science already has five sections with over 100 juniors and seniors enrolled.
“I thought, there we are right next to the bay. I mean, we’re just begging for a marine science class,” Tucker said.
“[The class] was a whole lot more than what I expected. I didn’t know Ms. Tucker would be using iPads and computer games to make the class interesting,” senior Carlos Mira said.
Tucker has plans to start research in the San Francisco Bay, and has written a grant for three large aquariums to be placed throughout campus, with more additions to come.
