Keepin’ It Real or Keepin’ A Weave

Hair is a big deal to black people. Some black girls do not like their natural hair so they spend money on weaves, wigs, and fake braids. Black guys who think their hair is not naturally good usually go bald or use S-Curl which is a perm for men to make hair more soft and curly.
We should all just go natural.

About a year ago I had a tall afro. It was probably the worst period of my life. Every five seconds my hair was being sexually harassed. Not many black people touched my hair, but white people would touch my hair like they were petting a dog.

Eventually, I got used to it. There was one part of my life when I did like my long hair. When I was younger I decided to braid my hair because it was too long. I wanted to keep my hair natural and let it grow out, and not a lot of guys in my neighborhood had braids.

I had braids when Lil’ Bow Wow and his braids were popular. My braids were everything to me. You know how people say a dog is man’s best friend? My braids were my best friend. I know it sounds weird but when I had no friends my braids were there for me, so I used to talk to my braids all the time. I never thought my braids and I would ever be apart.

I was heartbroken when my mom got tired of braiding my hair and made me cut my braids off. It was different to walk around with my hair cut for the first time. It started to get cold. That’s a big problem for me. I hate going outside with a fresh cut when it is cold. I want to show off the cut but at the same time I want to wear a beanie and keep warm.

Speaking of keeping warm, I feel bad for the O.G.’s in the hood, because once your hairline goes it never comes back. When a black guy gets the Lebron James hairline, he usually can’t stand to be talked about so he often just cuts it off and goes with the bald look. If you ever go to an all black community you will see at least five bald black guys. It’s as common to see a bald headed guy in the ghetto like it is to see another boy band in America reach fame.

Black girls have hair problems too. Some black people criticize black girls for using perms and weaves to have “white girl hair.” One day their weave might be “on fleek” (looking good) then the next morning they wake up looking like Django when he was chained, and that’s a scary sight.

Weave is a hairstyle created by weaving pieces of real or fake hair into a person’s hair, to increase its length or thickness. Black girls don’t like people touching their hair any more than I do. “When people ask me if they want to touch my hair it’s like asking me to go through my purse,” junior Cierra Haynesworth said. Buying a weave is like buying a dog; you can only have it for so long until it dies.

What some black people don’t know is that a bottle of perm can have them looking like Britney Spears in 2007. I would be scared if I had to use perm. Using perm means washing your hair with a whole bunch of chemicals like ammonium thioglycolate, free ammonia, thioglycolic acid, and hydrogen peroxide.
A favorite complaint of some black girls is that perm is the reason why their hair is short. I hate to hear stories like that because even though perm made their hair short they still use it. That’s like me complaining that procrastination is the reason why I don’t complete homework assignments, but I continue to procrastinate.

Edges are the defending champions of hide and seek for some black girls. Edges are the baby hair at the side of a girl’s hairline; it’s like a hairline with longer hair. Perm is bad enough but some black girls use greases that make edges show and lay down.

It’s funny how a girl would do anything to make her hair look the best. If you never heard of edge control it is used to make edges lay down and be “on fleek.” That is why some black girls hate swimming. The water from the pool is going to wash out all the chemicals from the perm and the edge control.

Black people have nice natural hair. I feel like perms and weaves do not make us look any better. I have three little sisters who wear fake braids and use perms and weaves, so I’m not trying to get on black girls about their hair. It’s their hair and their choice. Blacks, whites, Asians, etc., we all have problems with our hair. But black people should consider keep their hair natural. We should not have to worry what people think. There are bigger problems in life to worry about.
